Dr. Vandana Shiva

Food Justice Activist and Physicist

West Chester University

Tuesday, March 21st

Time Magazine called her an “environmental hero” in 2003 and Forbes identified her as one of the Seven Most Powerful Women on the Globe in 2010. Please join us for:

  • Round Table Discussion: This event is open to the public and will include targeted community members: 4:00pm - 5:30pm in Sykes Ballroom C.

  • Public Talk: Dr. Shiva will give an evening lecture titled “Soil, Not Oil” in Asplundh Concert Hall, 7pm - 9pm. Doors open at 6:30.  This Free but ticketed event is also open to the public (tickets available soon from SSI box office.)

A description of the talk from Dr. Shiva:

“We are the Soil. Humus, the Latin word for Soil, is the root of Human.

“A century of fossil fuel based industrial agriculture with its roots in war has not just destroyed 75% of the soil, water and biodiversity; it is responsible for 50% of the greenhouse gases leading to climate chaos. And it has resulted in structural hunger as well as 75% of the food related diseases. In "Eating Oil" we are becoming sicker.

“Fossil fuels and fossil fuel industrial agriculture is also at the root of erosion of democracy. Agro-ecology / Organic farming grows democracy, produces more and better food, grows health, mitigates emissions, and creates climate resilience.

“Moving away from fossil fuels, returning to the soil, has become an ecological, health, and democratic imperative.”
