Student Intern - Urban Hydrology/Water Quality

Description

The Penn State Center Pittsburgh is looking for a student with education in Hydrology to assist in monitoring and evaluation benchmarks of water quality impacts in an urban area. The main responsibility would consist of monitoring water runoff at existing Stormwater Mitigation Demonstration projects in both the Four Mile Run and Larimer neighborhoods in Pittsburgh; while evaluating and comparing past monitoring results from those sites. The Intern will also assist in developing monitoring techniques for several sites of a large green infrastructure initiative known as Project 15206. Water sampling and lab work will be needed to ascertain water quality and quantity after the stormwater runoff percolates through pervious concrete and adjacent bio swales/rain garden construction. This testing should reveal actual numbers regarding the mitigation of various pollutants from our rivers when using green infrastructure. A final report comparing current monitoring results to past is required. Requirements: Junior or Senior. This summer work opportunity will be for the period mid-May through mid-August, approximately 30 hours per week.

Student Intern - Landscape Contracting

Description

The Penn State Center Pittsburgh is looking for a Landscape Contracting student to work in the field for the installation and maintenance of rain gardens and other various green infrastructure throughout Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods. In addition, this intern will be involved in community development installations in which the Center is involved, such as installation of a KABOOM playground. The student will need to work collaboratively with local community residents as well as with community professionals to complete project work. Some activities may include volunteer training and supervision during installation or maintenance work. In addition the individual may assist in the creation of various manuals to help guide target populations in the management of green infrastructure. Requirements: Junior or Senior. Student Intern - Landscape Architecture

Description

The Penn State Center Pittsburgh is looking for a Landscape Architecture student with creativity and good technical skills to assist in design and construction of the various initiatives of The Penn State Center Pittsburgh. The Center is currently undertaking a very large green infrastructure pilot project known as Project 15206. Landscape architecture assistance is needed to help with construction details of the incorporation of green infrastructure within the project area. Other projects may include landscape architecture assistance for various municipalities and neighborhoods in Pittsburgh to help them with design and construction details of community development projects such as gateways to their communities, green infrastructure, redesigned business districts, etc. These all add value to their communities while celebrating their rich histories. Requirements: 4th or 5th year student. This summer work opportunity will be for the period mid-May through mid-August, approximately 30 hours per week.

Student Intern - Marketing/Communications

Description

The Penn State Center Pittsburgh is looking for a student with an interest in marketing and communications to assist in effectively telling the story of the Center, an office of Outreach and Extension and an urban platform for the University in meeting its obligation in the transfer of research based practice into community problem solving. Their main responsibility will consist of updating the Center’s Overview and seasonal program agendas, assisting in the implementation of its social media strategy as well as drafting marketing materials for new programs. The Intern will work directly with the Assistant Director in implementing the Center’s marketing plan by working with the marketing staff of Outreach and Online Education on website and social media updates, new programming, and engaged scholarship marketing materials as well as the Center’s local Pittsburgh based messaging consultant on media releases. Requirements: Junior or Senior. This summer work opportunity will be for the period mid-May through mid-August, approximately 30 hours per week.
