Penn State’s Sustainability Institute is looking to hire a student project manager to create a Zero-Waste plan that THON can implement in the upcoming 2-5 years. Graduate and Undergraduate students from any academic discipline are encouraged to apply and internship credit can be discussed. This project manager will be the central coordination point between the THON executive committee, involved faculty, and Sustainability Institute staff to generate a report that reviews current operations, identifies areas for improvement and creates an implementation timeline to minimize waste generated during the three major events THON sponsors; 5k, Family Carnival, and Dance Marathon Weekend. A successful candidate must be able to work within a large complex organization with a diverse group of stakeholders. A basic understanding of THON’s organizational structure, Zero-Waste principals, procurement, interest in and knowledge of sustainability issues and concepts is preferred. A candidate will be asked to have the ability to prioritize multiple projects, meet deadlines and enjoy a fast-paced work environment. Tasks might include planning, convening, and facilitating meetings between various stakeholder groups to build consensus and generate creative solutions, collection/analysis of data to ensure data driven solutions, translating technical information to general knowledge though effective report writing, design of electronic and in-person educational materials. The paid internship will be for 10 hours per week with a deadline for the initial Zero-Waste report being completed by June 30th. The potential extension throughout the summer as implementation needs arise will beconsidered. The SustainabilityInstitute Student Programs Coordinator will supervise the project manager providing the project guidance and mentorship. Regular update meetings will occur, to update progress, address any questions, and provide feedback. With appropriate guidance and  support, the project manager will be expected to be able to carry out many tasks independently.
