Renowned Climate Scientist Michael Mann at Community College of Philadelphia, Nov. 9

Michael Mann, Professor of Meteorology at Penn State and an authority on global warming, will speak in Philadelphia November 9, 2015.   He is a leading member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which with Al Gore won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.   He will speak at the Bonnell Auditorium of the Community College of Philadelphia at 7:00 PM.  His talk is sponsored by the Sierra Club and CCP Coalition for a Sustainable Future.

Mann's graph, The Hockey Stick, plotting earth's surface temperature against time over the last 1,000 years, is familiar to anyone who recognizes the threat to civilization posed by global warming.  The graph is so-named because it shows a sudden, steady rise in temperature in the last 250 years, coinciding with man's increasing use of fossil fuels.

In his talk titled "The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars:  The Battle Continues," he will "attempt to use The Hockey Stick to cut through the fog of disinformation that has been generated by the campaign to deny the reality of climate change.  It is my intent, in so doing, to reveal the very real threat to our future that lies behind that campaign."

False accusations of data manipulation were directed at Mann when email exchanges from the University of East Anglia in Great Britain were hacked. The accusations were dismissed upon investigation of the charges by that university and later, Penn State University, the Environmental Protection Administration, and the National Science Foundation.

Mann's contributions to IPCC research, along with those of other scientists, were specifically acknowledged by the Nobel Committee.

The Sierra Club is an environmental organization with 8,500 members in Southeastern PA.  The Coalition for a Sustainable Future is based at the Community College of Philadelphia.
