Do No Harm: How the Health Care Sector is Taking Climate Action
Climate change is harming the health of patients and communities. The health care sector is on the frontline of climate change, bearing the shifting burden of disease attributable to climate change along with injuries and illnesses related to extreme weather events. These climate-driven, extreme weather disasters can also disrupt health care infrastructure, access, and delivery, at times when communities rely most on hospitals to remain open and operational. The health care sector has a healing mission; however, its operations contribute to climate change and the burden of disease, with the health care sector responsible for almost 10% of US greenhouse gas emissions, which is not in keeping with the oath to “first, do no harm.” As trusted messengers, health professionals have a historic opportunity to use their influence to promote climate-smart health care and climate solutions to protect public health.
