Home electricity use, even when you're sleeping or away! Surprising news and info. Idle loads are those things in our house that use electricity even when we think they are off. How much electricity does your house use when you're away? It can be astonishing. Recent studies have found that about a fourth of the electricity our houses use is for idle loads. That's roughly equivalent to 6 solar modules per household, for idle loads!
