2019 Student Farm Field Internships in State College, PA
The Student Farm at Penn State, University Park, is now offering paid opportunities for current Penn State students to work with the Student Farm in our fourth growing season! Student farmers lead and participate in farm production, harvest, marketing, community outreach, volunteer management, event planning, and more. Previous experience in relevant fields is welcome, but not as necessary as the motivation to learn and contribute to a positive work environment.
Responsibilities
Student farmers ensure safety, maintain quality produce, and contribute to a fun, collaborative, and educational work environment. Student farmers will learn about and engage in farm management, production, and marketing while incorporating community and education through coordinating volunteers, tours, class visits, events, and more. Farm activities that student farmers lead and participate in include:
- Attend weekly farm planning meetings on Monday mornings at 7am
- Sow seeds in greenhouse and field, transplant plants in field
- Manage production and record keeping including irrigation, fertilization, pest and weed management
- Harvest, wash and market crops through our CSA and to campus dining
- Work with community partners including food pantries, community gardens and area schools
- Host and lead volunteers and other visitors at the farm
- Drive a university vehicle as needed
Internship Details
- Pay is $11/hour
- Summer Term: May 6-August 18, 25-40 hours/week, weekdays 7am-12pm with additional hours
- Fall Term: August 19-October 311, 12-15 hours/week, good possibility to continue work in spring 2020
- Work is primarily outdoors on the Student Farm and partner farms, with some computer-based work including record keeping, event planning and blog writing
Qualifications
- Upon hiring, completion of 3-credit training during spring semester 2019 on Mondays from 3:30-6:30
- Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
- Able to prioritize and learn new tasks quickly, meet deadlines, and enjoy a fast-paced work environment
- Able to work outdoors in varied weather and able to lift 50 pounds
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to the Student Farm is required
