The Penn State Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research along with the Penn State DuBois Earth Science Club invite members of the community to attend a free screening of "Switch" at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11 in Penn State DuBois' Hiller Auditorium.
"Switch" is a documentary that investigates all forms of energy production from natural gas to oil to coal and on to new renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power. The film attempts to answer questions about all forms of energy production, including the safety, environmental impacts, efficiency and viability of each. Documentary filmmaker Harry Lynch and geologist Scott Tinker collaborated on the project, following Tinker's 10 years of research into alternative energy use.
The film is part of the Switch Energy Project, a larger educational program designed to build energy awareness and efficiency, and find practical solutions to the world's energy challenges. The filmmakers remind the audience that energy impacts all parts of our lives, including the economy, water, population and more. Their goal is to promote the understanding of energy and the relationship it is has to all of these issues.
"We want our energy to be cheap, reliable and environmentally benign, and this film makes it clear no energy source at this time meets those three criteria," said Michael Arthur, professor of geosciences and co-director of the Penn State Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research. "Understanding the impacts of each of our energy options is critical as we map out our energy future."
